5 Tips For Safe Winter Weather Driving

Now that fall is upon us, winter and the forces of Mother Nature won't be too far behind! Before the cold and dangerous weather of winter set in, its important to brush up on your knowledge of these safe driving tips to help get you to your destination safely.

Clear your windows of snow, ice & frost

This seems like a pretty self-explanatory step, but how many times have you seen that driver looking through a small hole in the windshield that they've cleared off? Make sure to brush all snow and remove any ice that may cause a loss of vision while driving.

Adjust your driving speed

It is very easy on icy or snowy roads to accelerate to fast and spin the tires. Whenever your tires break loose, you run the risk of losing control of your vehicle. Breaking distance also can become an issue so driving slower for the conditions will help to ensure that you are able to break earlier. Don't apply heavy pressure to the breaks since locking your wheels can cause your vehicle to slide.

Avoid making quick maneuvers

Try to eliminate the need to make quick turns or other lane changes. Turning and accelerating at the same time can increase the chance that you lose traction and contribute to your vehicle sliding.

Be ready if you lose control of your vehicle

If you begin to feel your car or truck sliding on icy road conditions, DON'T PANIC! Let off of the gas and try to not over correct by turning in the opposite direction. Many times when a vehicle enters a slide, it will recover if you let off the gas and ease into the slide to correct it.

Be aware of everyone else on the road

The best tip for safe winter driving is to watch out for everyone else! If you live in a cold climate area that experiences a lot of snow and ice in the winter, you've probably seen that driver who is out on the road driving just as fast as they do on dry pavement in the summer... DON'T BE THAT PERSON! Take your time and leave 5-10 minutes earlier so you don't have to be hurried to get to your destination.
