Get Your Truck Ready For Summer

Before you get ready to head out for a big 4th of July trip, now is the time to make sure your truck or SUV is ready for summer travel. Heat, dirt and city driving can do a number on your vehicle and it always helps to perform preventative maintenance to keep your vehicle running at its top performance.  Now that summer is in full effect, here are some easy preventative measures to be sure you're ready to hit the road.

  1. Check your tires... the first thing that will put a stop to your vehicle is a flat tire.  Always be sure to check your tire pressure when you fill up with gas and be sure that you are running on better than 4/32" of tire tread.  Properly inflated tires will also ensure that you get the best fuel economy as well as not causing added stress to the sidewalls.  Also, have you done a regular tire rotation?
  2. Check your lights & brakes... its always good to check that all of your lights are functioning properly, you want to be able to see good at night as well as letting everyone else on the road see you.  Brakes are an item that most people don't think about until they hear the squeal of the brake pads rubbing on the rotors.  Always check that you brake reservoir is to the proper operating range and be sure you don't feel any pulsating when you apply your brakes.
  3. Check your battery... you don't want to be stranded out in the middle of nowhere with a dead battery!  Make sure that all of the connections are free of corrosion.  Be sure to re-tighten the connections if you remove them.  Many auto parts stores will hook up a battery tester to let you know if your battery is handling the proper load.
  4. Cleaning or changing your cabin filter will be sure that clean air is entering your air conditioning system and have it operating at its best performance.  Also be sure to change your vehicles air filter every 10,000 miles.
