What Are LED Lights Made Of | What Is An LED

What is LED light bar

You hear about LED lights and LED light bars for your truck all the time, but what is an LED light made of? This is a question that you may have wondered about, but if you're like me, all you really care about is how much light the LED light bar that is on our truck puts out. For the other people who are wondering what an LED light is, read more below.

LED stands for light-emitting diode and is a two-lead semiconductor light source. When voltage is applied to the leads of this p–n junction diode, electrons recombine with electron holes within the LED, releasing energy in the form of photons. The effect of this is called electroluminescence, and the color output of the light is determined by the energy band gap of the semiconductor.

LEDs first started appearing in practical electronic products in the 1960's. the earliest LEDs emitted low-intensity infrared light. Early LEDs were mainly used as indicator lamps for electronic devices, replacing small incandescent bulbs. They were then compiled into segment displays commonly seen in digital clocks.

LEDs found in todays LED light bars have many advantages over incandescent light sources including more efficient power usage, longer lifetime, compact size, and faster switching on/off. The amount of Lumens/watt of power consumed is far superior with LED lights. The use of LEDs is continuing to expand due to the excellent performance of this technology. Almost every light on a modern car or truck can now be upgraded to a replacement LED bulb.
