What Size Trailer Hitch Ball Do I Need For My Trailer

Are you ready to tow you trailer out on your next big trip?  An essential component for towing is knowing what the correct trailer hitch ball is for your coupler.  A hitch ball is bolted onto a trailer hitch ball mount and provides the connection from your truck to your trailers coupler.  The ball allows the trailer to turn freely while towing and are available in a variety of diameters, weight capacities and lengths to ensure a proper and secure fit to your vehicle.

Trailer Ball Sizes

To determine the proper size of ball that you need, look at the coupler on the tongue of your trailer.  Most couplers have the proper ball size and towing capacity stamped into them.  The most common sizes of trailer balls are 1 7/8", 2" and 2 5/16".  When choosing the proper ball, always be sure to have the correct ball diameter and choose a ball that exceds the trailer couplers maximum capacity.

Hitch Shank Sizes

The shank size of your trailer ball is the diameter of the mounting hole on the ball mount. The most common sizes are 3/4", 1" and 1 1/4".  Measure the size of the hole on the ball mount and find a ball with the correct shank size.  Never install a trailer ball with a shank size that is smaller than the hole on the ball mount.

Trailer Ball Rise

Some trailer balls are available with with a built in rise that positions the ball higher above the ball mount to add additional clearance from the trailer coupler.  The typical amount of rise from this type of ball is 1"-2".
