The Shocker HD Max Air Hitch works like a small air suspension system mounted at the connection point between your pickup and your trailer. As you tow, road bumps and jerks constantly shift the trailer's weight around; a hard hitch passes all of that straight into your truck and trailer, while this air hitch filters, dampens, and absorbs it. When a bump lifts weight off the front of your vehicle or slams extra tongue weight onto the rear, the air spring soaks up the force before it can hurt your steering, braking, or trailer stability. At the heart of the design is a simple, effective rocker-arm pivot that produces a smooth down-and-back motion, working together with a heavy-duty air spring bag and dual urethane bump cushions. The greaseable 1" diameter 1045 carbon steel pivot bolt keeps that motion controlled and serviceable for the long haul, and the dual bump cushions add heavy-duty performance on the roughest roads and highways. This  version is built for a 2-1/2" receiver. It is great for bumper-pull trailers using a 2" or 2-5/16" ball coupler, and it offers 1/2" to 4-1/2" of drop so you can get your trailer sitting level. Level towing paired with air-ride cushioning is what keeps weight distributed properly and helps prevent trailer sway. Do note that towing capacity is always limited by the lowest-rated component in your setup, and this product is not designed to work with a weight-distribution hitch system. Installation is straightforward and requires no drilling or vehicle modification. Before you install, you compress the air spring: use the provided cotter pin clip to push in the valve core and release air pressure, while simultaneously pushing down on the paddle or squeezing the plates together to exhaust the remaining air. Slide the hitch shank fully into your 2-1/2" receiver tube, align the pin holes, insert the hitch pin, and lock it with the cotter pin clip. Next, install the combo ball mount into the Shocker hitch frame at a drop setting that lets your loaded trailer sit level, and secure it with the provided hitch pins and cotter pin clips.

To set your air pressure, hook up and load your trailer as you normally would, then inflate the air spring. As pressure builds, the unit rotates and lifts the hitch point; add air until the top of the hitch frame just touches the truck-side bump cushion. That light contact is the "sweet spot," and you stop adding air there. For heavy loads you can compress the tailgate-side cushion by roughly 1/8". A quick safety note that matters: NEVER exceed 100 PSI, as that can damage the air spring or bushings. If your paddle sits at more than about a 10-degree angle when aired up, a spacer block can be added on top of the paddle to level it (a spacer is often included with 2-1/2" receiver HD air hitches when needed).
