At a glance

Overall sentiment is strongly positive: buyers consistently describe Gatorback/SharpTruck mud flaps as premium, heavy‑duty, great-looking, and highly effective at stopping rocks/mud/snow from hitting paint, steps, and trailers. The main reservations are the high price and occasional installation/fitment or hardware/packaging issues, which are often mitigated by responsive customer service and strong warranty support.

What Customers Liked

  • Thick, heavy rubber with substantial weight plates; feels “OTR/semi-truck grade,” doesn’t flap at highway speeds, flexible in cold weather, holds up through winters, gravel roads, mud, and years of use; many repeat buyers across multiple trucks.
  • Significantly reduces rock chips, road debris, mud/salt spray on paint, rocker panels, running boards/power steps, cameras, and keeps trailers/5th wheels/RVs cleaner and protected; coverage often better than OEM or plastic splash guards.
  • Looks “sharp,” classy, and truck-specific; logo/plate options (Z71, AT4X, Ford, Ram, Duramax, flags, black/satin/gunmetal/chrome) get compliments and help the truck stand out; finishing caps appreciated.
  • Many report perfect/vehicle-specific fit with factory-hole mounting, adjustable in/out positioning, good clearance with stock tires, and compatibility with certain trims/fender flares when configured correctly.
  • Generally described as straightforward with the right tools; helpful YouTube videos; bracket kits (especially rear/dually) add stability and make alignment easier; ability to install without removing wheels on some vehicles.
  • Frequent praise for fast shipping, responsive support, quick exchanges for wrong parts, replacement parts/plates/flaps shipped rapidly, and hassle-free warranty (including tears/rips or shipping damage).
  • Replaceable plates; removable lower section on some models for off-road clearance; ability to adjust flap stick-out; some like drilling only into plastic liner (not body).

Things to Consider

  • Most common complaint; many call them expensive/overpriced (often $600–$1000+), sometimes compounded by needing separate bracket kits/plates; some say alternatives may be “good enough” for less.
  • Mixed experiences: some installs are quick, others take hours—especially rear/dually, with wheel-well liners, rock rails/steps, or limited access; right-angle drill and/or removing rear wheels often recommended; alignment can be finicky.
  • Paper instructions sometimes vague, lacking steps, inconsistent with videos, or confusing (hardware ID, left/right orientation, templates, washer placement); requests for better labeling, templates, and model-specific videos.
  • Occasional reports of holes not lining up, needing to drill/elongate slots, bend/trim brackets, trim liners/trim pieces, or create homemade brackets; some rubbing with oversized tires/offset wheels; a few cases of poor fit on specific trims/years.
  • Multiple reviewers note drilling is still required (usually into plastic liner or flap), so ‘no-drill’ feels misleading in some kits.
  • Some dislike plastic clips/nut inserts pulling out/stripping, mixed metric/SAE hardware, bolt length issues, flimsy/galvanized or plastic brackets at high price, silver hardware visible (wish black), occasional missing/mismatched hardware or parts.
  • Some flaps/plates arrived scuffed/scratched or boxes damaged; brackets loosening in transit; a few wrong items shipped or missing pieces (spacers/washers/clips), though support often resolves quickly.
  • Some note low ground clearance depending on model/height; concerns about snagging in deep snow, tall grass, or off-road obstacles; some wish flaps were longer/shorter depending on use.
  • Plate finish can streak/stain (e.g., gunmetal), color/gloss differs from expectations, logos not level in a few cases, and some wish flaps came pre-slotted/pre-drilled for easier install.

The mounting/backing plates went in without a hitch. Then went to install the rubber flaps, watched videos and read directions. No holes in the flaps to match the plates. Very confusing, can't locate holes below with plates installed. They say if you buy them from Ford the flaps are predrilled for the 2017 Super Duty. Payed top dollar for these, should be done right. Not happy with them.
Gatorback mudflaps installation with custom brackets

The installation took several hours due to the instructions not being very clear or user friendly.  I consider myself very mechanically inclined and I had trouble interpreting the instructions. I suggest adding some photos along with the instructions showing how the brackets should look installed. The brackets fit OK, but not great. I had to do some amount of improvising to get things to fit. Aside from this, the installation went well and in the end, the mudflaps look great and the custom brackets provide very sturdy support for the heavy mudflaps. I'm very happy with the installation. In spite of the few issues that I had, I recommend these custom brackets to anybody installing rear mudflaps on a 2017 Ford F-350 dually.

Awesome product, mud flaps are only as good as the brackets that hold them in place. These brackets are as good as it gets at any price. Take the time to watch the tutorials, and installation is pretty straight forward. Installed with (21"X24") Ford Blue Oval flaps and the end result is A+
The flaps come pre-drilled for a universal installation, so when using the no drill brackets, you need to use the included templet to make the holes necessary for a custom installation. I used a uni-bit to drill holes, this also gives you some adjust-ability for a perfect fit.

Bought a super clean 16 ford F-350 super duty dually. It didn't have any mud flaps and constantly was fling rocks and road debris. My brother has purchased a set for his 20 F-350 and was super happy with them. When I was in the market these are 2nd to none as far as I'm concerned.

How does this product differ from the Ford Accessories version?

- Chris on 7/12/2017

The flaps and brackets are the same as the Ford Accessories versions except that these flaps do not have have the slots precut. This is a very easy process and we have made a couple of videos on how to do each flap in just a couple of mins with common household tools. You can find these on our YouTube page or in the videos section.

Care and Maintenance

To ensure your Gatorback Mud Flap Set remains in peak condition, it's important to follow a simple care and maintenance routine. With regular upkeep, your mud flaps will continue to provide excellent protection and maintain their great appearance for years to come.

  • Cleaning
    • Rubber Flaps: Regularly clean the rubber flaps with water and a mild detergent to remove dirt, mud, and road debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could damage the rubber. A soft-bristle brush or sponge works best for scrubbing away grime.
    • Stainless Steel Plates: To maintain the shine of the stainless steel plates, use a stainless steel cleaner or a mild soap solution. Avoid abrasive pads, as these can scratch the surface. Wipe the plates dry with a clean, soft cloth to prevent water spots.
  • Plate Maintenance
    • Periodic Polishing: To maintain the polished look of the stainless steel plates, polish them periodically using a non-abrasive metal polish. This will help remove any minor scuffs or marks and keep the plates looking like new.
  • Hardware Check
    • Mounting Brackets and Fasteners: Periodically inspect the mounting brackets and fasteners to ensure they remain securely in place. Tighten any loose fasteners as needed to maintain stability and prevent any movement while driving. Checking the brackets regularly will ensure that your mud flaps stay properly aligned and continue to offer the best protection.
  • Avoid Excessive Force
    • Avoid backing into obstacles that could damage the mud flaps, especially the rear flaps which are larger. The heavy-duty rubber is designed to be highly durable, but repeated force or impact can cause unnecessary wear.
  • Seasonal Considerations
    • Winter Care: During the winter, road salt can accumulate on the mud flaps and brackets. Be sure to rinse them frequently to prevent corrosion of the mounting hardware.

By following these care and maintenance tips, your Gatorback Mud Flaps will continue to protect your vehicle and maintain their high-quality appearance for years to come. Remember, if you experience any issues with the rubber flaps due to normal wear and tear, Truck Hardware offers a replacement under the limited lifetime warranty.
