Gatorback Plate Finishes

Here are the different plate finishes

At a glance

Overall sentiment is strongly positive: buyers consistently describe Gatorback/SharpTruck mud flaps as premium, heavy‑duty, great-looking, and highly effective at stopping rocks/mud/snow from hitting paint, steps, and trailers. The main reservations are the high price and occasional installation/fitment or hardware/packaging issues, which are often mitigated by responsive customer service and strong warranty support.

What Customers Liked

  • Thick, heavy rubber with substantial weight plates; feels “OTR/semi-truck grade,” doesn’t flap at highway speeds, flexible in cold weather, holds up through winters, gravel roads, mud, and years of use; many repeat buyers across multiple trucks.
  • Significantly reduces rock chips, road debris, mud/salt spray on paint, rocker panels, running boards/power steps, cameras, and keeps trailers/5th wheels/RVs cleaner and protected; coverage often better than OEM or plastic splash guards.
  • Looks “sharp,” classy, and truck-specific; logo/plate options (Z71, AT4X, Ford, Ram, Duramax, flags, black/satin/gunmetal/chrome) get compliments and help the truck stand out; finishing caps appreciated.
  • Many report perfect/vehicle-specific fit with factory-hole mounting, adjustable in/out positioning, good clearance with stock tires, and compatibility with certain trims/fender flares when configured correctly.
  • Generally described as straightforward with the right tools; helpful YouTube videos; bracket kits (especially rear/dually) add stability and make alignment easier; ability to install without removing wheels on some vehicles.
  • Frequent praise for fast shipping, responsive support, quick exchanges for wrong parts, replacement parts/plates/flaps shipped rapidly, and hassle-free warranty (including tears/rips or shipping damage).
  • Replaceable plates; removable lower section on some models for off-road clearance; ability to adjust flap stick-out; some like drilling only into plastic liner (not body).

Things to Consider

  • Most common complaint; many call them expensive/overpriced (often $600–$1000+), sometimes compounded by needing separate bracket kits/plates; some say alternatives may be “good enough” for less.
  • Mixed experiences: some installs are quick, others take hours—especially rear/dually, with wheel-well liners, rock rails/steps, or limited access; right-angle drill and/or removing rear wheels often recommended; alignment can be finicky.
  • Paper instructions sometimes vague, lacking steps, inconsistent with videos, or confusing (hardware ID, left/right orientation, templates, washer placement); requests for better labeling, templates, and model-specific videos.
  • Occasional reports of holes not lining up, needing to drill/elongate slots, bend/trim brackets, trim liners/trim pieces, or create homemade brackets; some rubbing with oversized tires/offset wheels; a few cases of poor fit on specific trims/years.
  • Multiple reviewers note drilling is still required (usually into plastic liner or flap), so ‘no-drill’ feels misleading in some kits.
  • Some dislike plastic clips/nut inserts pulling out/stripping, mixed metric/SAE hardware, bolt length issues, flimsy/galvanized or plastic brackets at high price, silver hardware visible (wish black), occasional missing/mismatched hardware or parts.
  • Some flaps/plates arrived scuffed/scratched or boxes damaged; brackets loosening in transit; a few wrong items shipped or missing pieces (spacers/washers/clips), though support often resolves quickly.
  • Some note low ground clearance depending on model/height; concerns about snagging in deep snow, tall grass, or off-road obstacles; some wish flaps were longer/shorter depending on use.
  • Plate finish can streak/stain (e.g., gunmetal), color/gloss differs from expectations, logos not level in a few cases, and some wish flaps came pre-slotted/pre-drilled for easier install.

The bracket is absolutely necessary. It stabilizes the mud flap and is easy to install
Just what I was looking for!

I was wanting to mount mud flaps on my 2001 F-350 and I just couldn't think of a good/easy way to mount them so they would be plenty sturdy. I found these and decided to give them a try. They are very sturdy and look good too! It is helpful to have an extra person to help out when mounting but other than that they are fairly self explanatory and easy to install. I would recommend these especially if you are trying to mount heavy rubber mud flaps! They work great!
Must have for mud flaps!

It took me a while to figure out how to properly install the mud flaps & brackets. After I went online and watched the install video, it was a breeze! Using clamps is a huge help when doing the job yourself. Not only do they provide stability to the mud flaps, they also help keep debris from kicking back into the bed panel. I won't be installing any cheap pre-fit plastic flaps on my vehicles after using these.

Truck Hardware Gatorback Black Plate Mud Flaps - Set

Elevate the style and protection of your truck with the Truck Hardware Gatorback Black Plate Mud Flap Set, specifically designed for 1999-2016 Ford F-250/F-350 single rear wheel pickup trucks. These mud flaps are built to handle the toughest road conditions while providing your vehicle with a sleek and distinctive look. Featuring 12-inch wide heavy-duty rubber flaps, with 9 inches of tire coverage for the front and 11 inches for the rear, these mud flaps offer comprehensive protection from road debris, keeping your truck clean and secure.

Constructed from 1/2" thick virgin rubber, these mud flaps are renowned for their strength and durability, making them capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions and daily wear and tear. The black anodized aluminum plates add a modern, refined touch that perfectly complements your truck's rugged appearance.

Key Features

  • Heavy-Duty Rubber Construction: Made from 1/2" thick rubber, these mud flaps are built to last, offering exceptional resistance to cracking and wear.
  • Black Anodized Aluminum Plate: The anodized aluminum plate measures 10 1/4" x 5" and adds a sleek, stylish accent to your truck's overall look.
  • Comprehensive Tire Coverage: The front flaps offer 9 inches of tire coverage, while the rear flaps provide 11 inches, effectively shielding your vehicle from rocks, mud, and other debris.
  • Custom Fit Rear Support Brackets: Includes custom-fit rear support brackets (GB755007) that keep the mud flaps securely in place, even under challenging driving conditions.

Installation

Front Flap Installation: The front mud flaps attach directly to the lip of the wheel well using self-tapping screws, and existing factory fasteners can also be used if available. Installation is straightforward, requiring only basic tools. Ensure there is at least 1/2" of clearance between the tire and the wheel well to accommodate the flap's thickness. The front flaps install flush with the wheel well, allowing for seamless integration with accessories like step bars, power boards, or side steps.

Rear Flap Installation: The rear flaps are installed using custom-fit rear support brackets and one or two self-tapping screws to secure them tightly against the wheel well. This method ensures that the mud flaps stay in place, preventing them from flapping against the tires, even during tough driving conditions.

Tire Coverage

  • Front Mud Flaps: Provide 9 inches of tire coverage, ensuring protection from road spray and debris.
  • Rear Mud Flaps: Provide 11 inches of tire coverage, offering maximum coverage for the rear wheels to keep your truck clean and protected.

Care & Maintenance

To keep your Gatorback Black Plate Mud Flaps in top condition:

  • Rubber Flaps: Clean regularly using mild soap and water to remove dirt, grime, and road salt. Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents that could degrade the rubber. Apply a rubber protectant to maintain flexibility and prevent cracking.
  • Aluminum Plate: Clean the black anodized aluminum plate with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner to maintain its appearance and prevent discoloration.
  • Mounting Hardware: Periodically check all mounting hardware for secure attachment, especially after off-road use or exposure to severe weather.

Manufacturer Warranty

Gatorback Mud Flaps come with a Limited Lifetime Warranty. This warranty covers rubber replacement (e.g., tear-offs) for the original owner. It does not cover damage caused by misuse, abuse, or normal wear and tear on brackets, plates, or mounting hardware.

The Truck Hardware Gatorback Black Plate Mud Flaps are a perfect choice for any Ford F-250 or F-350 owner looking to enhance their truck's protection and style.
