Gatorback Plate Finishes

Here are the different plate finishes

At a glance

Overall sentiment is strongly positive: buyers consistently describe Gatorback/SharpTruck mud flaps as premium, heavy‑duty, great-looking, and highly effective at stopping rocks/mud/snow from hitting paint, steps, and trailers. The main reservations are the high price and occasional installation/fitment or hardware/packaging issues, which are often mitigated by responsive customer service and strong warranty support.

What Customers Liked

  • Thick, heavy rubber with substantial weight plates; feels “OTR/semi-truck grade,” doesn’t flap at highway speeds, flexible in cold weather, holds up through winters, gravel roads, mud, and years of use; many repeat buyers across multiple trucks.
  • Significantly reduces rock chips, road debris, mud/salt spray on paint, rocker panels, running boards/power steps, cameras, and keeps trailers/5th wheels/RVs cleaner and protected; coverage often better than OEM or plastic splash guards.
  • Looks “sharp,” classy, and truck-specific; logo/plate options (Z71, AT4X, Ford, Ram, Duramax, flags, black/satin/gunmetal/chrome) get compliments and help the truck stand out; finishing caps appreciated.
  • Many report perfect/vehicle-specific fit with factory-hole mounting, adjustable in/out positioning, good clearance with stock tires, and compatibility with certain trims/fender flares when configured correctly.
  • Generally described as straightforward with the right tools; helpful YouTube videos; bracket kits (especially rear/dually) add stability and make alignment easier; ability to install without removing wheels on some vehicles.
  • Frequent praise for fast shipping, responsive support, quick exchanges for wrong parts, replacement parts/plates/flaps shipped rapidly, and hassle-free warranty (including tears/rips or shipping damage).
  • Replaceable plates; removable lower section on some models for off-road clearance; ability to adjust flap stick-out; some like drilling only into plastic liner (not body).

Things to Consider

  • Most common complaint; many call them expensive/overpriced (often $600–$1000+), sometimes compounded by needing separate bracket kits/plates; some say alternatives may be “good enough” for less.
  • Mixed experiences: some installs are quick, others take hours—especially rear/dually, with wheel-well liners, rock rails/steps, or limited access; right-angle drill and/or removing rear wheels often recommended; alignment can be finicky.
  • Paper instructions sometimes vague, lacking steps, inconsistent with videos, or confusing (hardware ID, left/right orientation, templates, washer placement); requests for better labeling, templates, and model-specific videos.
  • Occasional reports of holes not lining up, needing to drill/elongate slots, bend/trim brackets, trim liners/trim pieces, or create homemade brackets; some rubbing with oversized tires/offset wheels; a few cases of poor fit on specific trims/years.
  • Multiple reviewers note drilling is still required (usually into plastic liner or flap), so ‘no-drill’ feels misleading in some kits.
  • Some dislike plastic clips/nut inserts pulling out/stripping, mixed metric/SAE hardware, bolt length issues, flimsy/galvanized or plastic brackets at high price, silver hardware visible (wish black), occasional missing/mismatched hardware or parts.
  • Some flaps/plates arrived scuffed/scratched or boxes damaged; brackets loosening in transit; a few wrong items shipped or missing pieces (spacers/washers/clips), though support often resolves quickly.
  • Some note low ground clearance depending on model/height; concerns about snagging in deep snow, tall grass, or off-road obstacles; some wish flaps were longer/shorter depending on use.
  • Plate finish can streak/stain (e.g., gunmetal), color/gloss differs from expectations, logos not level in a few cases, and some wish flaps came pre-slotted/pre-drilled for easier install.

Just what I was looking for!

I was wanting to mount mud flaps on my 2001 F-350 and I just couldn't think of a good/easy way to mount them so they would be plenty sturdy. I found these and decided to give them a try. They are very sturdy and look good too! It is helpful to have an extra person to help out when mounting but other than that they are fairly self explanatory and easy to install. I would recommend these especially if you are trying to mount heavy rubber mud flaps! They work great!

Mudflap quality is great! They seem very heavy duty and have a great amount of weight to them. The design plate on them has good detail and the extra brackets for the rear are pretty much a necessity to keep the rear flap sturdy, remember to add the brackets to the cart before ordering because they are not included. Overall happy with the mudflaps!

Built from 1/2" thick virgin rubber, these flaps are made to withstand the toughest conditions, remaining flexible and resistant to cracking and fading. The 304 stainless steel plates showcase the American Flag emblem, giving your truck a bold appearance while providing additional durability. As part of the Truck Hardware Gatorback series, these mud flaps are known for their premium quality, perfect fitment, and long-lasting protection, making them a smart investment for any truck owner.

Key Features

  • Heavy-Duty Virgin Rubber Construction: Made from 1/2" thick rubber, these mud flaps are designed to resist cracking and provide long-lasting durability, even in extreme weather conditions.
  • Exclusive Black American Flag Design: The American Flag logo is displayed on a 304 stainless steel plate, giving your truck a unique, rugged appearance that turns heads wherever you go.
  • Comprehensive Tire Coverage: The front flaps provide 9 inches of tire coverage, while the rear flaps provide 11 inches, offering superior protection against rocks, mud, and debris.

  • No Body Drilling Required: These mud flaps are designed for easy installation without the need for body drilling, preserving your truck's factory finish.

Tire Coverage

The Gatorback Black American Flag Mud Flap Set offers optimal tire coverage to ensure your truck stays protected from road elements:

  • Front Tire Coverage: The front mud flaps provide 9 inches of coverage from the bottom of the fender to the bottom of the flap, minimizing the impact of road debris and protecting your vehicle’s body.
  • Rear Tire Coverage: The rear mud flaps provide 11 inches of coverage, keeping your truck and any towed trailers protected from road spray and debris.

Installation

Front Flap Installation: The front mud flaps attach to the wheel well lip using self-tapping screws, with the option of utilizing existing factory fasteners if available. Installation is simple and requires only basic tools. Be sure to allow for 1/2 inch of clearance between the tire and the wheel well to accommodate the flap thickness. These mud flaps mount flush with the wheel well, allowing compatibility with accessories like step bars or power boards.

Rear Flap Installation: The rear mud flaps are installed using custom-fit rear support brackets and self-tapping screws, which help keep them tightly in place, even during challenging road conditions. This prevents the flaps from flapping against the tires.

Care & Maintenance

To keep your Gatorback Black American Flag Mud Flaps in great condition:

  • Rubber Flaps: Regularly clean using mild soap and water to remove dirt, grime, and road salt. Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents that could degrade the rubber. Applying a rubber protectant helps maintain flexibility and prevents cracking.
  • Stainless Steel Plate: Clean the stainless steel plate with a non-abrasive cleaner to maintain its appearance and prevent rust. Avoid using abrasive materials that could scratch the surface.
  • Mounting Hardware: Periodically check all mounting hardware for secure attachment, especially after off-road use or exposure to severe weather conditions.

Manufacturer Warranty

Gatorback Mud Flaps are backed by a Limited Lifetime Warranty. This warranty covers rubber replacement (e.g., tear-offs) for the original owner. It does not cover damage caused by misuse, abuse, or normal wear and tear on brackets, plates, or mounting hardware.

Terms
