Dually Flap Installation

Gatorback Plate Finishes

Here are the different plate finishines

At a glance

Overall sentiment is strongly positive: buyers consistently describe Gatorback/SharpTruck mud flaps as premium, heavy‑duty, great-looking, and highly effective at stopping rocks/mud/snow from hitting paint, steps, and trailers. The main reservations are the high price and occasional installation/fitment or hardware/packaging issues, which are often mitigated by responsive customer service and strong warranty support.

What Customers Liked

  • Thick, heavy rubber with substantial weight plates; feels “OTR/semi-truck grade,” doesn’t flap at highway speeds, flexible in cold weather, holds up through winters, gravel roads, mud, and years of use; many repeat buyers across multiple trucks.
  • Significantly reduces rock chips, road debris, mud/salt spray on paint, rocker panels, running boards/power steps, cameras, and keeps trailers/5th wheels/RVs cleaner and protected; coverage often better than OEM or plastic splash guards.
  • Looks “sharp,” classy, and truck-specific; logo/plate options (Z71, AT4X, Ford, Ram, Duramax, flags, black/satin/gunmetal/chrome) get compliments and help the truck stand out; finishing caps appreciated.
  • Many report perfect/vehicle-specific fit with factory-hole mounting, adjustable in/out positioning, good clearance with stock tires, and compatibility with certain trims/fender flares when configured correctly.
  • Generally described as straightforward with the right tools; helpful YouTube videos; bracket kits (especially rear/dually) add stability and make alignment easier; ability to install without removing wheels on some vehicles.
  • Frequent praise for fast shipping, responsive support, quick exchanges for wrong parts, replacement parts/plates/flaps shipped rapidly, and hassle-free warranty (including tears/rips or shipping damage).
  • Replaceable plates; removable lower section on some models for off-road clearance; ability to adjust flap stick-out; some like drilling only into plastic liner (not body).

Things to Consider

  • Most common complaint; many call them expensive/overpriced (often $600–$1000+), sometimes compounded by needing separate bracket kits/plates; some say alternatives may be “good enough” for less.
  • Mixed experiences: some installs are quick, others take hours—especially rear/dually, with wheel-well liners, rock rails/steps, or limited access; right-angle drill and/or removing rear wheels often recommended; alignment can be finicky.
  • Paper instructions sometimes vague, lacking steps, inconsistent with videos, or confusing (hardware ID, left/right orientation, templates, washer placement); requests for better labeling, templates, and model-specific videos.
  • Occasional reports of holes not lining up, needing to drill/elongate slots, bend/trim brackets, trim liners/trim pieces, or create homemade brackets; some rubbing with oversized tires/offset wheels; a few cases of poor fit on specific trims/years.
  • Multiple reviewers note drilling is still required (usually into plastic liner or flap), so ‘no-drill’ feels misleading in some kits.
  • Some dislike plastic clips/nut inserts pulling out/stripping, mixed metric/SAE hardware, bolt length issues, flimsy/galvanized or plastic brackets at high price, silver hardware visible (wish black), occasional missing/mismatched hardware or parts.
  • Some flaps/plates arrived scuffed/scratched or boxes damaged; brackets loosening in transit; a few wrong items shipped or missing pieces (spacers/washers/clips), though support often resolves quickly.
  • Some note low ground clearance depending on model/height; concerns about snagging in deep snow, tall grass, or off-road obstacles; some wish flaps were longer/shorter depending on use.
  • Plate finish can streak/stain (e.g., gunmetal), color/gloss differs from expectations, logos not level in a few cases, and some wish flaps came pre-slotted/pre-drilled for easier install.

Good Product, Hard Install But Love Them
5
Now that they are installed I am really pleased with the dually mud flaps. The quality of the material is top notch. They are made of a thick gauge rubber that has substantial weight.  I ordered the mounting brackets for the rear flaps and again the material was top-notch. The bracket and all mounting hardware was stainless steel. The only complaint...well it really isn't a complaint...more of a warning...is that putting the rear mud flaps on by yourself is a chore.
The main problem is that the mounting bracket has to be screwed on the backside of the fender lining. This requires that you reach all the way to the top of the space of the back of the fender lining to install the bracket, which has 4 bolts, 8 fender washers, 4 lock washers and 4 nuts to install. This was a very tedious process. At first I could not comprehend how I was going to get the washers and nut on the backside of the bracket due to the small space couple with having to lift my upper body with abdomen crunches all while trying to put the various washers and nuts on the bolt. I finally came up with the system of putting the fender washer, lock washer and nut on the bolt and then using masking tape to tape the washers and nut together than unscrewing the "assembly" from the bolt. At that point I had one "unit" which I could manage to screw on all together under the truck. If you have a creeper (which I didn't), especially one with an elevating head, it would make things much easier.
After getting the bracket installed you have to "interpret" the instructions for where the mounting bolts go. The drawing is not very intuitive but if you study it for awhile all becomes "clearer".
To put the bolts, fender washers, lock washers and nuts on the remaining holes would be much easier if a helper was available. I didn't have one and managed to get all on but with some more stretching and odd positioning.
BTW, the video of the installation is helpful but VERY misleading, It is much more difficult to install than the impression it gives.
The only technical problem I had was that on my 2019 RAM 3500 dually with fender flairs, one of the pre-drilled holes of the flap did not line up with the factory holes on the the fender flair. I called Sharp Truck and spoke with technical support and couldn't have been more pleased. The person who helped was very knowledgeable. He asked me to send him a couple of photos of my problems, which I did, and within 15 minutes he called me back, having spoken with the manufacturer. All I had to do was to use one of the self-tapping bolt that came with the flap (as opposed to the bracket) to secure it. (The instructions does say this but it was so hidden I didn't see it. Again, while the instructions do work but they could use more of a step-by-step approach instead of the "exploded drawing' they use.
One other issue I encountered was that the outer rear wheel must be removed to drill the holes through the fender liner. I have a right-angle drill but even it wouldn't fit. This really isn't that big a deal but it was something I didn't know before beginning the project. The video gives you the impression that this wouldn't be necessary.
In summary, I am very happy with the dually flaps and would definitely would buy them again. I just didn't realize it was going to take all day to install them. I guess I was naive. Bottom line, I love them and feel even more so because I had to really work to get them on!

Great Looking, Tough Flaps!

These flaps are well built, tough, and look great on the truck! Install was about an hour for each side. Instructions are OK; if you watch the video as well it helps. It made things much easier to leave all fasteners finger tight until everything is installed and lined up. It was also easier to line the flap up by attaching it to the factory screws first, lining it up, then drilling the two holes thru the inner fender, instead of doing that first as they do in the video. The bracket that goes behind the inner wheel well is a bear to install if you have a folding bed step. If you don't have a right angle drill, you'll need to remove the rear tires.  Not that hard of an install overall and the flaps look great.
