Gatorback Plate Finishes

Here are the different plate finishines

At a glance

Overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive: customers consistently describe Gatorback/SharpTruck mud flaps as premium, heavy-duty, great-looking products that provide excellent protection, with standout customer service and warranty support; the main negatives are high price and occasional installation/hardware/fitment frustrations.

What Customers Liked

  • Thick, heavy rubber with a substantial feel; durable, flexible in cold/snow/ice; doesn’t “sail” at highway speeds; plates/weights feel robust and can be replaced/swapped.
  • Significantly reduces rock chips, mud/salt spray, and slush on rocker panels, running boards/power steps, bumpers, trailers/RVs; many note cleaner sides and less debris noise on gravel roads.
  • Vehicle-specific fit often described as ‘like a glove’/OEM; finishes (chrome, gunmetal, black plates) and logo plates (Z71/AT4X/FX4/Ram/Ford/Chevy, flags, etc.) ‘make the truck pop’ and draw compliments.
  • Many report straightforward installs, especially after the first flap; helpful YouTube videos; slotted holes help leveling; adjustable stick-out; removable lower section appreciated for off-roading/clearance.
  • Fast shipping is frequently praised; responsive support for exchanges/mis-shipments/damaged parts; hassle-free warranty replacements (torn/ripped flaps or scratched plates) often sent quickly.

Things to Consider

  • Most common complaint: ‘pricey/overpriced’ (often $600–$1000 with brackets/plates). Some feel brackets/plates should be included at that price.
  • Installs can be time-consuming or awkward (especially rears/dually setups), sometimes requiring wheel removal, right-angle drill, extra hands, drilling into plastic liners, trimming liners/trim pieces, or drilling/slot-cutting templates.
  • Paper instructions sometimes lacking, confusing, or mismatched vs video; hardware bags not well-separated/labeled; left/right not always marked; templates/printer scaling issues; ‘no-drill’ marketing criticized when drilling plastic is required.
  • Occasional reports of cheap/fragile fasteners, plastic clips/nut inserts pulling out/stripping, mixed metric/SAE heads, silver hardware being visually noticeable, bracket thickness/material concerns (plastic/galvanized vs stainless), and clamp-on brackets potentially rubbing paint (suggest PPF/tape).
  • Some vehicles need hole elongation, bracket bending, or ‘gerry-rigging’; occasional rubbing with oversized tires/offset wheels; a few reports of mis-shipped parts (two rears), wrong plates/colors, missing washers/spacers/clips/screws, or shipping scuffs/scratches/damaged boxes.

Brackets appeared to be heavily made, but after installation, I found that they were not heavy enough to support the rubber mud flaps. I had to add a homemade bracket for extra support.

Mom gave me flaps for the dually for Christmas. When I felt how heavy they were I knew the plastic inner liners would never hold them. I put them aside thinking I would have to fabricate something to mount them to. Started surfing YouTube for ideas and ran across these on SharpTruck. Reasonably priced compared to some that I saw. Decided to give them a try. I was skeptical when the box arrived. It looked like it had made the trip back and forth to (“Made In”) Taiwan several times. Pretty beat up looking and labels had been Sharpied over a couple times. Took longer to get here than I anticipated. Amazon & Walmart has us spoiled I guess. I threw it over in a corner in the shop until I had time to mess with it. We only use the dually to pull the toy hauler so no hurry, it’s winterized for a couple more months. Weather been crappy & I’m pretty caught up on Honeydo’s so decided to spend a day in the shop today. Opened the box, all the parts were bagged and shrink wrapped intact as advertised. The galvanized metal was a heavier gauge than the weight of the box lead me to believe, bonus! Instructions were straight forward, simple to follow. I prefitted everything using some plastic clamps, a piece of scrap 6x6 and a 2x4 wedge to see how it would go. I left the tires on the truck (instructions recommend removing them...NOT). I took the inner liners loose and folded them up over the tires to get to the bracket that needed drilled and bolted to the pinch weld. I opted to bolt that to the truck first, then attach the flap mounted to bracket after refastening the inner liner. That’s supposed to be all there is to it and would probably be fine but I decided to run a 5/16 self tapping screw through the flap& bracket into the outer plastic flare on the truck. There are also 2 holes on the main metal fender lip of the truck that could be used to bolt through the flap but after tightening everything up I decided I would try this and see how well it holds up. I’m completely satisfied with the product and will use SharpTruck for future purchases again.

The Gatoback Mudflap Bracket kit is as easy to install and the instructions were fairly easy to use. The actual product was pretty self explanatory. The product is well built and looks great on my Ford Dually.
